Are Olympiads and Scholarship Exams Worth the Time?

Not for the certificate. For what they do to a student's reaction when a question does not look familiar.

Parents usually ask about Olympiads in terms of outcome — will it help with admissions, is the certificate worth anything. Those are the least interesting reasons to do them.

The real benefit

School exams ask questions in formats students have seen. Competitive exams do not. The first time a student meets a genuinely unfamiliar question is a small crisis, and where that happens matters enormously.

If it happens in a Class 8 Olympiad, it is a curiosity. If it first happens in JEE, it is a disaster.

Olympiads and scholarship exams are cheap, low-stakes exposure to being confused — and to discovering that being confused is survivable and often productive.

What they build

  • Tolerance for unfamiliarity. The single most transferable skill in competitive exams.
  • Reading a question properly. Olympiad questions punish skimming.
  • Working without a taught method. Constructing an approach rather than recalling one.
  • Exam-hall composure, built years before it is needed.

What they do not build

They do not cover syllabus, and they should not replace it. A student neglecting school work to chase Olympiad medals has the priorities inverted. These are a supplement, occupying a small share of time.

How much is sensible

One or two a year, prepared for lightly. Enough for the exposure, not enough to distort the schedule. The preparation should mostly be attempting past papers, not a separate course of study.

How to handle a poor result

This matters more than the result itself. A student who does badly and is told they underperformed learns that unfamiliar questions are dangerous — the opposite of the intended lesson.

The useful response is curiosity: which questions were hard, what would have helped, what was interesting. The score is close to irrelevant at this age.

Frequently asked

Do they help with admissions?

Marginally at most, in Indian engineering and medical admissions. Do them for the practice, not the credential.

Which ones?

Any reputable Science or Mathematics Olympiad, and the state scholarship examinations. The specific banner matters less than the exposure.

My child gets anxious about extra exams.

Then frame it as practice with no stakes and mean it — no consequences for the result. If the anxiety persists, skip it. The benefit is not worth building exam dread.

Our Foundation programme includes exposure to these formats within the regular teaching, so students meet them without extra pressure.
