NEET Biology in Class 11: A Month-by-Month Plan

Class 11 Biology is half the NEET syllabus and the half most students rush. A sensible order through the NCERT units, month by month, and the three habits that make the second year easier.

Illustration of a NEET Biology study plan across the Class 11 year

NEET Biology carries 360 of the paper's 720 marks, and a large part of it comes from the Class 11 NCERT book. Students who treat Class 11 as a warm-up spend Class 12 catching up. A steady plan, one unit at a time, avoids that.

Why Class 11 decides so much

Class 11 Biology introduces the vocabulary the whole subject runs on: classification, cell structure, plant and human physiology. Class 12 builds on it, and the revision year has no time to learn it from scratch. NEET questions trace closely to NCERT lines, diagrams and tables, which is why reading NCERT properly matters more than any extra book.

A sensible order through the year

Schools and coaching classes order the units differently, and that is fine. What matters is that each unit is finished — read, revised and tested — before the next one starts. One workable order, for a year that starts in June:

  • June – July: Diversity in the living world. The Living World, Biological Classification, Plant Kingdom, Animal Kingdom. Heavy on names and features; make your own comparison tables as you go.
  • August: Structural organisation. Morphology and Anatomy of Flowering Plants, Structural Organisation in Animals. Diagram-heavy; draw them, do not only read them.
  • September – October: Cell. Cell: The Unit of Life, Biomolecules, Cell Cycle and Cell Division. The base for genetics and biotechnology in Class 12.
  • November – December: Plant physiology. Photosynthesis, Respiration in Plants, Plant Growth and Development. Processes and steps — learn them as flowcharts.
  • January – February: Human physiology. Breathing, Body Fluids and Circulation, Excretion, Locomotion, Neural Control, Chemical Coordination. A large, high-scoring block; start it early enough to revise it.
  • March onwards: first full revision of Class 11 before Class 12 begins, with mixed-unit tests.

Check the current NCERT book and the official NEET (UG) syllabus for the year you appear: chapters are sometimes added or dropped, and the official bulletin is the final word.

Three habits that make Class 12 easier

  • Revise weekly, not only before exams. Fifteen minutes a week on old units keeps them alive; a year-end cram does not.
  • Keep one notebook of diagrams and tables. It becomes the fastest revision tool in the final months.
  • Practise questions unit by unit. Reading feels like progress; questions show what has actually stuck. How to analyse a mock test explains what to do with the mistakes.

Do not let Physics slide

Biology rewards steady reading, so it is tempting to give it all the time. Physics is where most NEET scores are actually lost — here is why — so Class 11 needs both.
