MHT-CET Is a Speed Exam. Here Is How to Train for It

Students who prepare seriously for JEE often underperform in MHT-CET, and they are usually baffled by it. The syllabus was not the problem. The clock was, and so was a strategy imported from the wrong exam.

Three differences that change everything

1. Less time per question

MHT-CET allows considerably less thinking time per question than JEE Main. A method that takes ninety seconds is not a method here — it is a reason you did not finish the paper.

2. No negative marking

This single fact inverts the optimal strategy. In JEE, restraint protects your score. In CET, an unattempted question is a guaranteed zero while a considered guess is not. Students carrying JEE caution into CET routinely leave fifteen or twenty questions blank and lose marks they could have had.

3. Class 11 carries real weight

A meaningful share of the CET paper comes from the Class 11 syllabus — material a Class 12 student may not have revisited in a year. This is the most common and most avoidable gap we see.

How to train speed without losing accuracy

1. Timed sets of 20. Twenty questions, hard stop at the time limit. Frequency matters more than volume — three short sets a week beats one long one.
2. Formula fluency drills. Standard results recalled instantly. Deriving mid-paper is the single largest avoidable time cost.
3. Track time per question, not just score. A 90% score achieved in 130% of the available time is a failing result. You need both numbers.
4. Practise the skip decision. Decide within about fifteen seconds whether a question is worth continuing with. This is a trainable skill and almost nobody trains it.
5. Full-length mocks, exam conditions. Same time of day, no pauses, no phone. Stamina is part of what is being tested.

Do not neglect Class 11

Build a rolling Class 11 revision into your CET plan from the start rather than attempting it in the final month. One chapter a week alongside your Class 12 work is enough, and it is the cheapest score improvement available to most students.

Can I prepare for CET and JEE together?

Yes, and you should if you are appearing for both. The subject base is shared — only the exam technique differs. Run CET pattern practice alongside rather than treating it as a separate syllabus.

When should I start full-length CET mocks?

Sectional timed sets from early Class 12; full-length mocks from around three months out, weekly in the final six weeks.

Should I really guess every question?

An educated guess after eliminating one or two options, yes. Random guessing on a question you have not read is not strategy.

We are often asked about a short crash course close to the exam. We do not run one. A few weeks is not enough to build the speed this paper rewards, and we would rather say so than sell something that cannot deliver.

What does help, if time is short, is narrowing the work: timed sectional practice on the chapters that carry the most marks, and a hard look at where the clock is actually being lost. That is ordinary work, and it belongs inside the regular programme rather than alongside it.
