State Board or CBSE for Class 11 and 12 Science?
By this stage the question is not which is better. It is which fits the entrance exam you are actually preparing for.
Class 12 Boards: Answer Writing Is a Separate Skill
Knowing the answer and writing one that earns full marks are different things, and only one of them is practised.
Students preparing for both boards and entrance exams spend two years training to select the right option quickly. Then they sit a board paper that asks them to write, structure and present — and nobody has practised that.
What board examiners reward
- Completeness. Every step, stated assumptions, units at each stage.
- Structure. Points that can be found, not a paragraph that must be searched.
- Labelled diagrams. Reliable marks, routinely given away.
- Correct terminology. The textbook term, not an approximate synonym.
- Legibility. An examiner marking hundreds of scripts cannot award what they cannot read.
The habits entrance preparation creates
Two years of objective questions teach a student to reach the answer as fast as possible and skip the working. In a board paper the working is the marks. Students routinely write the correct final answer and score half.
This is not a knowledge gap and no amount of revision fixes it. It needs written practice.
Practical rules
- Answer length follows the mark allocation. A five-mark answer needs roughly five substantive points.
- Start with the definition or formula, then derive or apply.
- Draw the diagram even when not explicitly asked, where it is relevant.
- Underline key terms. It guides the examiner to what earns marks.
- Number sub-parts clearly and answer in order where possible.
- Leave a line between answers. Costs nothing, reads far better.
Subject notes
Physics: derivations in full; state the principle before applying it.
Chemistry: balanced equations with conditions; mechanisms drawn.
Mathematics: every step — method marks are real and generous.
Biology: labelled diagrams; flow charts for processes.
How to practise it
Written, timed, full papers. Not solved mentally, not skimmed. Five to eight previous-year papers per subject, actually handwritten, is worth more than twice that number read through.
Prelims are the only realistic rehearsal most students get. Treating them as a formality wastes the one opportunity to find out how long writing actually takes.

Does handwriting matter?
Legibility does. Beauty does not. If yours is hard to read, slow down slightly — the marks recovered exceed the time lost.
Should I write everything I know?
No. Padding wastes time you need elsewhere and irritates the examiner. Match the mark allocation.
How early should I start written practice?
From the second half of Class 12, and seriously in the final two months.
